People with disabilities are the largest minority group in the nation and the number is increasing; one in five Americans, 54 million people, has some kind of disability. While we strive to provide each individual an Independent Living Plan (ILP) that has been personalized to suit their needs and enhance their ability to live independently, we also work towards systems change – creating positive change regarding policies and legislation related to people living with disabilities.
Much of our work in systems change is to educate legislators and the broader community on the issues and opportunities facing people with disabilities. We advocate at a systemic level to change policies, rules or laws which determine how services are provided to people with disabilities. We aim for systems change to work at the macro level to benefit everyone.
