Billy McLeod is a person with a disability. He was referred to Access to Independence by his health insurance, Care1st, for assistance in helping him transition from a skilled nursing facility (SNF) back into the community and into a place he could call “home.” In turn, this center applied for state funding to help him get started. He is an excellent example of how a little help can go a long way.
When he was discharged from the SNF and arrived at his new apartment, all he saw were “bare walls and carpet,” he explained. Later that day his new furniture started to arrive and the groceries were delivered to him using state funding. The next day, he reports that he was so excited that he “couldn’t sleep the night before.” Later that week, his household items for his kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom were also delivered. His bathroom will be equipped for grab bars for safety. Now he revels at his “lovely apartment” and he reports that he can “now sleep in peace and quiet.”
