Karl Jessop was recovering from the amputation of both legs at Sharp Rehabilitation Center when we first him and learned that he would be needing some assistive technology equipment in order to maintain his independence once discharged. When our Independent Living Services Coordinator, Andrea Chavez, visited him at his home, Karl could not sit up on his own in bed which made him unstable and put added strain on his wife and daughter as his care providers. Andrea suggested that a DME specialist could fit Karl with a mattress and also get a trapeze bar to help him transition.
With funding from the State of California, we were able to help Karl purchase a slide board, mattress, trapeze bar and a manual wheel chair which all helped him gain his strength back and gave him the ability to transfer on his own. Now Karl can take showers independently with his manual wheel chair plus be able to participate in the community. His family reports that they are so happy because Karl is able to do so much more for himself and does not have to rely solely on his family.
Karl says that he is very grateful for all the support he received from Access to Independence and can’t believe how much his life has improved!
