Mr. Baucom is a veteran, and a senior person with disabilities. He was referred to Access to Independence by the Senior Center. At that time, he was in crisis and benefited from our various services and programs including housing, information and referral, assistive technology, independent living skills classes, and peer counseling.
Access to Independence helped Mr. Baucom avid being evicted from housing; receive deposit assistance from the West Foundation that enabled him to secure short-term housing while planning long-term housing. We also located money due to him from unclaimed property in Texas, connected him to various resources (he received a free government cell phone, a free computer, and enrolled in the PACE program). Through our assistance, we helped him in applying for veterans benefits that were due to him dating back several years, and he was awarded despite multiple attempts to obtain benefits on his own.
Because of his initiative and taking responsibly to pursue his goals, updating staff on his progress, he was recently awarded a rent-subsidized studio (HUD) in a new apartment building in downtown San Diego, CA. He serves as an example of how important it is to be consumer driven, get consumer buy-in, and for staff to act as a catalyst to the consumer’s needs for independent living.
Today he is confident and he continues thrive. He says, “I’m in heaven” when talking about his new apartment. He also contributes some of his successes to the staff at Access to Independence and says, “I couldn’t do it without your help.”
