As Access to Independence celebrates 50 years of service, we reflect on a legacy rooted in choice, dignity, and equal access for people with disabilities. For five decades, our work has focused on removing barriers and supporting independent living and civic participation has always been an essential part of that mission.
Voting is one of the most meaningful ways individuals can engage with their communities and have a say in decisions that affect daily life. From healthcare and housing to transportation and public services, the outcomes of elections shape the systems people rely on. Yet for many people with disabilities, the voting process can still present challenges that limit full participation.
The Access to the Ballot Initiative was created to help address those challenges. Through this program, Access to Independence provides information, resources, and one-on-one support to help voters with disabilities navigate the voting process with greater confidence and independence.
Barriers to voting can take many forms. Some individuals encounter physical accessibility issues at polling locations, transportation challenges, or long wait times. Others may face confusion with voter registration forms, limited access to voting materials in accessible formats, or uncertainty about what accommodations are available to them.
Through the Access to the Ballot Initiative, our team offers support with voter registration, updating voter information, understanding voting options, and requesting accommodations. The program also includes mock ballot practice, voter education, and access to assistive technology tools that can help make voting more accessible and manageable.
Access to Independence is a nonpartisan organization and does not support any candidate or political party. Our role is to support access—to ensure that people with disabilities have the information and assistance they need to participate fully in the voting process.
As we mark our 50th anniversary, this initiative reflects the values that have guided Access to Independence since our founding: empowerment, inclusion, and self-determination. Supporting access to the ballot is one of the many ways we continue to promote independence and community engagement.
We invite consumers, families, advocates, and community partners to watch our new Access to the Ballot Initiative video, which highlights the importance of accessible voting and the services available through this program.

For 50 years, Access to Independence has worked to ensure that people with disabilities are included in every part of community life. We look forward to continuing that work—together.
