Storm Recovery Help for O‘ahu Residents
The Kona low storms that flooded O‘ahu in March caused damage many households are still living with. If you are a person with a disability on O‘ahu and the storms set you back, we can help.
We can help with:
- Replacing medical equipment: wheelchairs, walkers, shower chairs, CPAP machines
- Emergency kits and battery generators
- Replacing documents lost to flooding
- Finding cleanup help
Call our Honolulu office at (808) 369-9521, Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Deaf and hard of hearing callers can reach us through relay by dialing 711. You can also email accessmedia@accesstoindependence.org, stop by the office, or send us a referral form.
What we Offer
Benefits Options Counseling
Helps individuals learn about what benefits they are eligible for and navigate the application or appeals process including: Social Security, CalFresh, caregiving services, transportation services, healthcare applications, discounted utilities, and more!
Emergency and Resilience Response Program (ERRP
Provides workshops and one-on-one emergency plan development to prepare for disasters. An emergency kit is provided free of cost!
One Step at a Time
Supports youth ages 14-24 in transitioning from foster care or institutional settings to independent living by providing equipment, supplies, and case management services as well as transitioning into adulthood by developing individual goals in employment, education, independent living skills, transportation and more – including learning to drive on our driving simulator!
My Ballot Initiative
A program dedicated to reducing barriers to the ballot and assists consumers with registering to vote and voting in person or by absentee ballot.
Homeward Bound Initiative
Supports individuals to safely transition from residential medical institutions into their own independent homes by providing equipment, supplies, and case management services.
Stepping-Stones Initiative
Provides housing assistance, accessibility modifications, and in-home support to help individuals with disabilities avoid institutionalization and remain living independently in their community.
Seeing Possibilities
Supports individuals 55 and older with vision loss by providing independent living skills training, assistive technology, mobility support, and resources to enhance daily life and maintain independence.

2024 Candidate Forum
Access to Independence in partnership with League of Women Voters of Hawaii hosted a Candidate Forum for the 2024 General Election. They discussed disability-related issues, encouraged dialogue between candidates and voters, and highlighted key issues affecting the disability community.
